Case 4

Why One Minnesota Farmer Prefers Pre-Owned Equipment Over Brand New Models

Chris is our regular customer, requiring heavy equipment to operate his nearly 1000-hectare farm in Minnesota. While the “young guns” keep buying the newest models, Chris successfully grows corn and wheat by leveraging affordable tractors, excavators, and other equipment from Albatross Equipment. Here’s why according to Chris:

Many Pros and No Cons If the Company Is Reliable

“I have been farming for more than 30 years. During this time, I have discovered that pre-owned equipment is superior to brand new as long as it comes from a reliable supplier like Albatross Equipment”

  • Cheaper maintenance.
  • Faster and easier repairs.
  • Build quality is better.
  • Lower fuel consumption.

To put it simply, pre-owned equipment saves Chris money, while delivering better results.

This is what Chris says about his preference for pre-owned heavy equipment:

“Many farmers avoid used vehicles, thinking they will fail any moment. In fact, when I was younger, I thought the same thing. That was before Albatross Equipment let me test each model right on my field, so I could see it in action knowing that it was just as good as new models”

“They also provide support when I am unsure of myself or lack knowledge about a certain machine. They even let you invite an independent mechanic to check out everything!”

“I found my perfect supplier. I always need to replenish my vehicle fleet, and now I can do so with lower costs & zero risk by buying tested old equipment from a company with 40 years of expertise.”

How to Find a One-of-a-Kind Excavator

Chris regularly buys equipment from Albatross Equipment and relies on our maintenance services as well. He’s one of our favorite customers because he knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to negotiate.

But recently, he came to us with a request for a rare, hard-to-find model. He didn’t just want any excavator; he wanted a specific world-class brand that hadn’t been built since the 80s and 90s.

He explained it by saying that the vehicles of that time were not so complicated, more economical, and more reliable. And besides, he liked the brand.

At Albatross Equipment, what the customer wants, the customer gets. So, we started searching. We contacted our partner companies, hoping one of them still had that old model on its balance sheet. We called all private owners from our expansive network. We even posted ads on all sites.

Due to our database of providers, suppliers, and clients, we usually find a specific model in 1-3 days. However, a week passed, and we still hadn’t located this rare excavator. Then, we got a call from a local farmer in Arizona. He had that excavator in his garage.

“But the vehicle hasn’t been running for a long time” the potential seller warned us.

We Bought It & Restored it to Like-New Condition

As the mechanic estimated, we were lucky that the vehicle was still operational. With almost 13 thousand hours of operation, it was a miracle. Its former owner, like our client, knew a lot about heavy equipment and how to take care of it.

The difficult work of restoring the excavator lay ahead. But first, we had to complete the deal. Having realized that he had such an in-demand rarity in his hands, the seller set a high price. But one of the vital principles of our work is that we sell equipment at a price below the market, which is possible because we buy cheap equipment and repair it ourselves.

Luckily, the seller wanted to continue selling his old equipment to Albatross, which is how we managed to reduce the price promising to give him fair compensation for any and every machine he had.

Finally, our driver transported the excavator across the entire country to our facility where we could thoroughly inspect every minuscule component.
Then, we didn’t just repair it…we fully restored the excavator. Our top-tier mechanics fixed the exterior, changed the components, aligned all systems, and undercarriage. Finally, we tested the vehicle in various real-world conditions before calling Chris.

30 Years Old, 13,000 Hours, and Still Performing Like New

From there, things moved quickly. After all, Chris wanted his specific machine.
Not only did we provide a 180-day warranty for free maintenance, but we delivered the long-awaited excavator less than a day after the call. Chris’s employee tested it for another 3 hours on-site.

Everything was perfect, except one thing… the fuel consumption.

It’s using too little. It’s even suspicious.

Chris – Our client

A few months later, our manager contacted the customer to find out how things were going. We do this for every customer because we care and their feedback is important, helping us improve each and every year.

Chris was happy. He knew that the vehicle was good. That was why he wanted that model. However, the excavator exceeded his expectations. It starts up fast even in freezing temperatures and can cope with any task: it clears snow, digs holes, and uproots trees.

“And it still barely uses any fuel!” the farmer happily summarized. “That’s because the vehicle is in perfect condition.”

The whole team was also happy. Our mechanics, drivers, and other specialists put their experience, skills, and a piece of soul into each item. They breathe new life into the equipment, and the owners get pleasure and benefit from using it. That’s the goal of our work.
